I've been working on mattress production lines for over a decade, from doing OEM for overseas brands to creating my own brand, Dreamate Mattress. There are some things I just have to get off my chest. This article is for people who want to buy a good mattress, and also for brands and wholesalers looking for a reliable factory.
For one mattress, 60% of the money went to advertising
Whether it's a DTC brand or traditional retail, the real cost structure of a mattress looks like this:
Cost Items
Proportion
Advertising + KOL + Customer Acquisition
35%-55%
Operations, Warehousing, Logistics
15%-20%
Free Trial Sleep Returns Loss
8%-12%
Materials and Manufacturing
Only 18%-25%
A mattress priced at 8,000 only spends less than 2,000 on materials and craftsmanship.
For consumers: The majority of what you pay isn’t for the mattress itself, it’s for the brand making you 'see it.'
For brands: If you think differently — skip the money-burning marketing arms race and connect directly with factories that have export-level quality control — you can spend more on materials at the same factory price.
Dreamate takes this approach: export-level materials, mid-range pricing, and no 'marketing tax' added to your bill.
Same material name, quality five times worse—factory can see it, but you can't
Foam: Density < 30kg/m³, two-year sag rate over 70%. Pass line ≥ 35kg/m³, Dreamate all ≥ 38kg/m³.
Latex: Natural content of 60% and 92% are both called 'natural latex.' Don’t touch it if it doesn’t have Oeko-Tex or GOLS certification.
Pocket springs: Wire diameter should be 1.8-2.2mm, the fabric bag must be high-density non-woven fabric, not regular polyester.
For consumers: Buying without seeing the specs is basically helping someone clear inventory.
For brands: When looking for a factory, ask for the material density table, spring wire diameter, and latex content—if they can’t answer, there’s definitely a QC problem.
The essence of the 100-day sleep trial
The handling cost for each returned mattress is 800-1500 yuan, and the industry's return rate is 5%-12%. All these costs are spread across all orders.
For consumers: You’re not really enjoying a free trial; you’re actually sharing the cost of returns with others.
For brands: Returns under the DTC model are a hidden cost black hole. If you’re running your own brand, either keep the return rate below 5%, or don’t pass the trial costs onto your customers from the start.
Certification labels—some are valuable, some are just stickers
Oeko-Tex Standard 100: The strictest textile safety certification in Europe. All Dreamate fabric quilting layers pass it.
CertiPUR-US: Sponge harmless certification, the threshold isn’t high, it's a baseline, not a highlight.
GOLS/GOTS: Organic certifications, very valuable, but also expensive.
Key judging standard: Is there a certification number? If there’s a number, you can check it on the issuer’s official website. If it’s just a logo without a number, you have to think for yourself.
For brands: When picking a factory, just ask, 'Which parts have which certifications, and send me the numbers.' A factory that can show them on the spot probably has a solid quality control system.
There's no industry standard for softness or firmness
The same 'medium-firm' mattress from Brand A and Brand B feels completely different when you lie down. A person weighing 60kg feels it’s soft, while someone weighing 90kg feels it’s hard — a mattress with fixed parameters can’t suit everyone at once.
Dreamate’s solution: airbag structure + left-right zones + self-adjustment
Husband and wife with 30kg weight difference? Each adjusts their own side
Back feeling sore today? Twist it to make it firmer
No need to return or exchange, just adjust until it’s comfortable
For brands: a mattress with fixed parameters is a commodity battlefield, and competing on price has no end. Differentiated features (adjustable, zoned support) are where the premium lies — which is why we’re happy to co-develop with brand clients.
The standard for a good mattress can be summed up in four words
Support: Side sleeping keeps your spine in a straight line, while back sleeping maintains a natural S-curve.
Fit: Shoulders and hips sink just the right amount, without creating a counterforce.
Material origin, aloe essence, far-infrared—bonus points, but not deal-breakers. How it feels to sleep is all physics.
Dreamate’s base layer uses export-grade high-density foam + individually wrapped springs to provide 10 years of support without sagging. The top layer has an airbag structure that lets everyone customize the firmness.
